Tips & Information

I hope you had a very fulfilling Thanksgiving. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to focus on the topic of gratitude and appreciation for what we already have, rather than focus on the financial aspect of what we may not have.

Let me start by saying I am profoundly grateful for all of your encouraging and supportive emails and phone calls throughout the year. Thank you for the opportunity to touch your lives as you have touched mine.

Even though my signature topic is usually around personal cash flow, one of the books I’ve written and don’t often mention is Daily Riches: A Journal of Gratitude and Awareness, which I co-authored with Jane Bluestein and SJ Sanchez. It was such a joy writing this book with my friends. I love having this month as the perfect time to discuss gratitude from the perspective of the Daily Riches book.

There are twelve chapters with different simple, unique and often overlooked ways of examining our lives in terms of gratitude - from the concrete and tangible to the more abstract and ethereal. Today I’ve selected 6 of those chapter topics to share briefly with you as you prepare for the holiday season …and every day.

Daily Riches: A Journal of Gratitude and Awareness

Daily Riches. Take a moment to recognize the “DAILY RICHES” that surround you every day. Notice the riches that are evidence of the prosperity in your everyday life. I've traveled to enough Third World Countries to really appreciate the comfort, convenience and luxuries Americans experience on a daily basis. Even going beyond the abundance of appliances, electronics, technical services, and home furnishings, remember to acknowledge the freedom and the abundance of all the choices in every facet of your personal, spiritual and professional life.

Gift of Perspective. Acknowledging the “GIFT OF PERSPECTIVE” is a wonderful way to highlight the positive changes you made in your life. Have you recently changed your perspective on your job or financial situation in a way that is serving you better emotionally? When you spend money, are you staying more conscious and spending with more priorities and values in mind, instead of simply trying to fill an inner emptiness? Are you more able to take things less personally, be less judgmental, handle setbacks with greater ease and patience than before?

Magic, Miracles and Synchronicity. What “MAGIC, MIRACLES and SYNCHRONICITY” happened in your life this year that fills you with gratitude? Anyone who has given birth to a new baby, after years of being told this would not be possible, knows what a miracle is. If you have ever narrowly avoided a disaster like an auto accident, or suddenly received a call from the perfect contact you were needing, or found a surprise crumpled twenty dollar bill in your winter jacket from last season - just when you were totally out of cash - then you probably appreciate those special times of magic and synchronicity.

A Pat on the Back. How often do you give yourself “A PAT ON THE BACK” and acknowledge yourself for all your personal accomplishments and achievements? Rather than end the day or the week thinking of all the unfinished projects, review your successes - big or small. Did you finally sign up for the investment seminar, pay off an old debt? Did you resist using your credit card for the tempting sale at the mall, online or the offer on the TV Informercial? Are you proud of yourself for standing up for yourself, setting a boundary with your teenager, asking directly for something you want, despite the possibility of rejection, anger or being ignored?

Pleasures of Service. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the rich opportunities found in the “PLEASURES OF SERVICE”. Service can range from simply opening the door for another, offering a complement, a smile, or a listening ear, to spending time with someone who is alone and dying, making meals for an elderly neighbor or taking time to fix a friends car while they get back on their feet financially. Reaching out to a person who is new or who is perceived as different in your community can also be a special act of service as you offer connection and compassion. Remember to appreciate these opportunities of being able to give and notice what you are receiving during the giving.

The Miracle in the Mirror. And finally, as you review all the gifts you are grateful for in your life this season, have you remembered the greatest gift of all - you - just the way you are – “THE MIRACLE IN THE MIRROR”? This is the time to appreciate the real inner you, not the you who appears to others as a boss, employee, parent, spouse or friend. Take a good look beyond the wrinkles, the cellulite, the bulge, the balding head, and other flaws, and see that loving, capable, intriguing person who greets you in the mirror every morning. Appreciate the reflection of the authentic you, with all your patience, wisdom, strength, generosity, integrity, creativity, intelligence, intuitiveness, courage, love, kindness and so much more. Acknowledge the unique contribution you have made to the world, simply by being you - a one-of-a-kind miracle.

I invite you to take time this season, especially after such a year of tragedy around the world, to be aware and thankful for the many, many simple and profound gifts and opportunities we have in our lives every single day.

"I find just opening up this book for even a short time gives me an instant morale-boost. I can feel tension subside immediately as I read through the wonderfully moving personal anecdotes and inspirational quotations sprinkled throughout the book!"
